Transloading

Mode-agnostic chemical transfer services — rail to truck, ISO container to truck or packaging, downpacking, container stuffing and unstuffing, and cross-dock operations. Tampa-based, HazMat certified, and built for chemical commodities.

More Than Rail to Truck

Transloading is the transfer of a commodity from one mode, container, or vehicle to another — and it takes many forms in chemical logistics. Rail-to-truck is the most common, but ISO shipping container transfers, truck-to-truck cross transfers, container stuffing and unstuffing, downpacking into drums or IBC totes, and cross-dock operations are all transloading services Meka provides.

The common thread: your product moves from one configuration to another efficiently, compliantly, and without unnecessary handling steps. Whether you're receiving bulk chemical by rail, importing via ISO container, or need to repackage bulk volumes into smaller quantities for distribution, Meka handles the transfer.

Operating from Tampa, we're positioned to support Florida's port activity, its rail network, and the highway distribution lanes that serve chemical end-users throughout the state and into the Southeast.

Transfer Modes We Handle

Every transloading operation is different. Here are the configurations we commonly work with.

Rail Tank Car Tanker Truck

The most common transloading operation — bulk liquid chemical transfer from rail car to DOT tanker for final-mile highway delivery.

ISO Shipping Container Tanker Truck or Packaging

Liquid chemical ISO tanks or dry container cargo transferred to highway equipment or broken down into drums, IBC totes, or other packaging.

Truck to Truck

Cross-mode or cross-equipment transfer between trucking configurations — for load optimization, equipment availability, or facility access requirements.

Rail or Truck Drums / IBC Totes / Packaging

Downpacking from bulk delivery into smaller containers for customers without bulk storage or those requiring packaged quantities.

ISO Container Cross-Dock or Stuffing / Unstuffing

Container stuffing (loading product into ISO containers for export or onward shipment) and unstuffing (unloading inbound containers) with cross-dock capability for onward distribution.

Common Questions

Transloading — FAQ

What is transloading?

Transloading is the transfer of a commodity from one mode, container, or vehicle to another — without the product returning to a shipper's facility between moves. For chemical logistics, this includes rail-to-truck, ISO container-to-truck, truck-to-truck, and bulk-to-packaged transfers. Meka handles transloading as a core capability, not a side service.

What types of transloading does Meka handle?

Meka handles rail tank car to tanker truck, ISO shipping container to truck or packaging, truck-to-truck cross transfers, bulk liquid to drum or IBC tote downpacking, and ISO container stuffing, unstuffing, and cross-dock operations. Contact us to discuss your specific transfer requirement.

What is downpacking?

Downpacking is the process of transferring bulk liquid chemicals from large-volume containers — such as rail tank cars, ISO tanks, or tanker trucks — into smaller packaging such as drums or IBC totes. This is useful for customers who purchase in bulk but need smaller delivery quantities, or who lack bulk receiving and storage infrastructure.

What is ISO container stuffing and unstuffing?

Stuffing refers to loading chemical product into an ISO shipping container for export or onward intermodal movement. Unstuffing is the reverse — unloading an inbound ISO container for domestic distribution. Meka can handle both, and cross-dock the contents to outbound trucks or into warehouse storage in a single operation.

Do you need rail access for transloading?

Not necessarily. Many transloading operations involve no rail at all — ISO container-to-truck, truck-to-truck, and container stuffing/unstuffing are all transloading operations that use highway and marine equipment only. Rail access expands what we can handle but is not a requirement for every transloading service.

Are your transloading operations HazMat compliant?

Yes. Meka is a registered DOT HazMat carrier (USDOT 3461404, MC1129972) and all transloading operations involving hazardous materials are conducted under applicable DOT HazMat regulations, with certified drivers and properly configured equipment for each transfer mode.

What commodities do you transload?

Meka transloads bulk liquid hazardous chemicals including caustic soda, potassium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, liquid alum, and similar industrial commodities. Contact us to discuss your specific product — commodity compatibility and equipment requirements vary by transfer type.
